Hey folks, if you're in Victoria, especially in Casey, listen up! There's a thing going around called Buruli ulcer, and it's linked to those pesky mosquitoes. So, this summer, let's be smart and guard ourselves against those little buggers.
New data is out, and it's showing that more Victorians are getting hit with this infection. In 2023, there were a whopping 363 cases – the most since this issue popped up in Victoria back in 2004.
Now, what's Buruli ulcer? It's an infection that mosquitoes can pass on, and it can mess up your skin big time. But hey, good news – you can treat it with antibiotics. The key is catching it early, so keep an eye out for symptoms.
Speaking of symptoms, watch out for spots that look like bug bites, painful lumps, ulcers, swelling limbs, red skin, and sometimes you might even get hit with serious pain and a fever.
Now, let's talk prevention. Cover up, people! Wear long, loose clothes. Slap on some insect repellent with Picaridin or DEET on any exposed skin. If mosquitoes are having a party outside, maybe think about staying indoors. And hey, get rid of any standing water where those mosquitoes love to breed – around your home or campsite.
Oh, and if you've got windows, make sure they've got mosquito nets or screens. Keep it clean – wash any cuts or scratches and throw on a dressing. And after playing in the great outdoors, give your skin a good wash if it's been hanging out with soil or water.
Our Acting Health Minister, Ingrid Stitt, says the warmer weather is like a red carpet for mosquitoes. She's urging us to be cautious, especially if we're hitting up coastal towns this summer. Ingrid suggests using insect repellent with DEET, covering up outside, and keeping it clean with good hygiene.
