The Eiffel Tower in Paris happily greeted 6.3 million visitors last year, according to its management company's announcement on Friday. This surpassed the number of visitors in 2019, the year before the Covid-19 pandemic hit. The SETE operating company shared in a statement that the increase of eight percent in last year's visitor numbers was fueled by events commemorating the 100th anniversary of Gustave Eiffel, the tower's designer.
To enhance the visitor experience, the tower introduced new features like guided tours and meals prepared by a celebrity chef in its upscale restaurant.
Known as France's "Iron Lady," the Eiffel Tower reached a peak of seven million visits in 2014 and maintained popularity with 6.2 million visitors five years later.
The tower faced closures during the initial pandemic lockdown in France from March to June 2020 and again from October 2020 to July 2021. Among the Eiffel Tower visitors, the majority, at 18.9 percent of the total, hailed from France. North Americans followed at 18 percent, with the United States contributing 13.2 percent alone.
Non-French Europeans made up 44 percent, with significant numbers from Germany, Britain, and Spain. The Rugby World Cup in the previous year led to an increase in visits from Oceania countries, including Australia and New Zealand.
In addition to the Eiffel Tower's success, Paris's major museums, also top attractions in the French capital, either matched or surpassed pre-Covid visitor numbers last year.
